Our Story
Morton & Cord is a Chartered Accounting firm based in Nowra, the largest metropolitan area of the Shoalhaven region. The firm originated as Tobin & Morton in the early 1970’s and through various name changes became Morton and Cord in 2005. Morton & Cord has two partners, brothers Michael and Matthew Lees. The firm is centrally located in Nowra with free client parking at the rear of the office.
A unique feature of Morton & Cord is that clients always deal with the partners of the firm, meaning that you will always receive a high level of client service and experienced accounting knowledge. All the partners are Chartered Accountants, an accounting qualification that maintains the highest professional and ethical standards.
Our Team
Michael Lees
CA | Partner
Michael received a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Wollongong majoring in accountancy and is also a Chartered Accountant, a Registered Company Auditor and Approved SMSF Auditor. Michael has worked at Morton and Cord since 2000 and in that time has built up an excellent reputation in the Shoalhaven region for his customer service and accounting knowledge. Michael specialises in tax, audits for registered clubs and the real estate industry as well as having an intricate knowledge of business structuring and superannuation strategies.
Michael enjoys fishing as well as playing hockey and cricket. His real love though is surfing, where he is able to combine his love of the water with his fear of sharks.
Matthew Lees
CA | Partner
Matthew received a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Wollongong majoring in accountancy and marketing and is also a Chartered Accountant. Matthew spent a number of years in Sydney working for Deloitte, where he specialized in high net worth individuals and family businesses as well as positions with Macquarie Bank and a boutique accounting firm. Matthew specialises in business structuring advice, taxation and superannuation, especially advice regarding self-managed superannuation funds.
Matthew enjoys playing cricket and hockey in his spare time and always looks for any excuse for a round of his new hobby, golf. His expertise in this area revolves around finding the Shoalhaven River from a number of different tees at the Nowra Golf Course.
Alan Thorpe
Senior Accountant
Alan received a Higher National Diploma in Business Studies from the City of London College and an Advanced Certificate in Commerce from TAFE NSW. Alan joined Morton & Cord in 1988 but in a previous life he was a driller in a Pilbara iron ore mine. Alan excels in the fields of accounting as well as auditing and has a very loyal client base who love his personalized and efficient style.
Alan is an avid traveller and when he’s not at home on his small farm he’s traveling the world with his wife. Alan also loves all things Italian and while he speaks the language, his skills in that area definitely improve after a few glasses of red wine.
Rachelle Kennedy
CA
Rachelle is a Chartered Accountant and received a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Wollongong, majoring in Accounting and Financial Planning. Rachelle has many years of experience in the industry, having worked at other local accounting firms and businesses.
Rachelle enjoys auditing clubs and large organisations and loves the interaction with her clients. In her spare time, Rachelle enjoys spending days at the beach, going to the gym and playing hockey.
Kerry Heckenberg
Accountant
Kerry joined our team in August 2017 and provides accounting assistance to the Partners and Client Managers along with bookkeeping services for clients. Kerry obtained her Diploma of Accounting in 2018. She enjoys helping clients with various accounting issues.
Outside of work Kerry enjoys playing touch football and spending time with her family. You will usually find Kerry on the sideline watching her children play soccer/rugby league/league tag/little athletics/touch football……it’s a long list!
Kate Reid
Reception | Administration
Kate is Morton and Cord’s ‘front of house’, bringing a wealth of administration experience to the position. Kate’s enthusiasm and high level of customer service ensure all client dealings are handled in the most confidential and caring manner.
When Kate isn’t at work, she is reading a good book in the sun or cross stitching up a storm of creative patterns while enjoying her favourite television series.
Kate Markham
Reception | Administration
Kate joined the team in January 2020 and is Morton & Cord’s 2nd ‘front of house’. She has a bubbly personality and loves to help people.
Outside of work, Kate enjoys riding motorbikes, going camping and adventuring with her Dalmatian puppy.
She is also involved in Trek4Kidz who hold fundraising events to raise much needed funds for Starlight Children’s Foundation.
Kate is a fairly easy going person who is a big animal lover. Be prepared, if you bring your animals into the office, you may leave without them.
